Räumliche Mobilität wird heute stärker durch soziale, kulturelle, ökonomische und technische Strukturierungen (wie Netzwerke, benachbarte Enklaven) als durch geometrische Entfernungen und geopolitische Grenzen geprägt. Dadurch entsteht für viele Menschen eine diskontinuierliche Territorialität des Lebens, was als Archipelisierung beschrieben werden kann. Die zugehörige Mobilität von Personen, Informationen oder Produkten findet zudem immer häufiger transnational statt, was Archipelisierung auch zu einem Kennzeichen derzeitiger Globalisierung werden lässt.
